O.S. Tile Options for cost effective 3D modelling

During the lifespan of a project there will be a necessity to use Ordnance Survey (O.S.) Data

ENVsupport has extensive experience in the procurement of O.S. data and the problems that can arise when trying to order.

Ordnance Survey (O.S.) tiles are used to create the 3D Terrain Model of the site location. On every model there is a mixture of tile types that provide different aspects of the model……………….Tile types used are as follows……

Terrain Model Tiles

are used to create the 3D Model of the landscape around where the new development is to be located and give heights of hills and levels of terrain.

It is important when determining the area to be modelled that any important receptor points far from the model are included in the terrain model area.

The usual optimal area for the terrain model is 15K x 15K (as shown below) which is the largest area you can purchase for the minimum order purchase requirement from O.S.
(Note: Smaller areas of terrain will NOT cost you less…)

Aerial Photo Tiles

are draped over the TERRAIN MODEL TILES to give the finished model some definition and recognisable points of reference with respect to the site’s location in the community.

HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGERY is used at the development sites location to give sharp close up ground detail while LOWER RESOLUTION IMAGERY (if necessary) is used to give reduced ground detail that is viewed in the distance.

O.S. Mapping Tiles

can be draped over the TERRAIN MODEL TILES and may be more suitable when covering larger areas and ground detail is not as crucial. One example may be the plotting of an overhead line showing pylons along a proposed route or showing a proposed cable route.

Below are options which show varying levels of detail and their approximate O.S. DATA ONLY costs. Additional MODELLING COSTS are dependant on detail required by Client.

Bitmap (BMP) Map Option: £60 (inc VAT)

This option includes only BMP MAPPING centred around the site location [RED] and draped over the 3D terrain model covering a 15K x 15K area [BLUE]. The BMP map provides points of reference to locate important viewpoints.

Using this option could provide a cost effective means for covering larger areas or for optioneering & assessing site locations earlier on in the project when the need for more expensive aerial imagery is not required in this phase of the project

Minimised Option: £80 (inc VAT)

This Option includes only HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGERY covering a localised area of 1K x 1K [GREEN] centred around the site location [RED] and draped over the 3D terrain model covering a 15K x 15K area [BLUE].

This is a lower cost option that may be suitable if all interest is in the localised area.

Localised Option: £175 (inc VAT)

This Option includes only HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGERY covering a localised area of 3K x 3K [GREEN] centred around the site location [RED] and draped over the 3D terrain model covering a 15K x 15K area [BLUE].

This option may be suitable if all interest is in the localised area.

O.S. Tiles Optimum Option: £282 (inc VAT)

This optimised option provides a balance between best quality for the lowest cost and will accommodate most exercises carried out when using the model. .

This consists of HIGH RESOLUTION imagery covering a 3K x 3K area [GREEN] centred on the new development site [RED] and provides sharp ground detail for close in viewing.

A 4K LOWER RESOLUTION imagery buffer zone extending 4K all around the HIGH RESOLUTION imagery, covering an 11K x 11K area [ORANGE], provides reduced ground detail when viewing in the distance and also provides recognisable points of reference to locate important receptor viewpoints.

All imagery is draped over a 3D terrain model covering a 15K x 15K area [BLUE] centred on the new development site [RED]. The 3D landscape can provide useful data can be used to assess screening using the landscape to hide the development.

Skylines can also be determined and provide backdrops for developments.

All imagery and modelling can be tailored to accommodate project needs and budgets……
