FAQ’s

1: How much do 3D visualisations cost.....?

A 3D flyable model can cost as little as £40 when using open data mapping (Low Resolution) from Ordnance Survey which is free, leaving only modelling costs to put the mapping together.
A mid-range model would be around £280 for high resolution O.S. data (which is generally purchased by the end client) and £350 for modelling costs.
Costs above this would depend on how much functionality you required in the model (i.e. drop down viewpoints, animated fly/drive thru’s etc) around £75 each

2: What can we do with 3D visualisations…..?

This question probably highlights why 3D Modelling is not used as frequently as it could be………

Imagine you have a 2D plan showing a development of a certain size and a screening bund of a certain size….?
You can work out how much of the development you can see by subtracting the height of bund from the height of the development.   Great……..
Now………..Imagine you are looking at the development from a hillside……..how much of the development can you see now…?

This is the type of worrying question that any local resident is wanting to know the answer to when told a new development is going to be constructed in their back yard.

By creating a 3D Model of the development in its location in a 3D terrain model you can actually fly to that hillside and look down on the development and actually show the local resident EXACTLY what they will see from that position in a tangible way that is they clearly understand and recognise.
If your development design has included effective screening the local resident, (and the Local Authority granting consent), will see that as well and be less likely to object to the development.

3: Do we really need 3D visualisations…..?

The honest answer here is NO, not really……………….But………..
When working for a long time on a particular project, in an industry where use of maps and drawings are common place, we can sometimes take it for granted that others outside the project team will instantly recognise and understand what they, probably for the first time, are looking at.

The people you are targeting during the consents stage of the project may well be members of the local community or Councillors from the Local Authority with little or no technical knowledge when reading engineering drawings.
As well as helping stakeholders MORE clearly understand what the development will look like in it’s location, you can use screen grabs from the 3D Model to show how well the development is screened from view, helping them make more informed decisions regarding giving consent..

Additional hidden benefits of 3D Modelling can be tying separate elements of the design together and ensuring that they all fit with each other (See Case Studies Page)

4: How long do 3D Visualisations take to do..…?

Because Envsupport is an small, independent operation, a detailed 3D Model can be on your laptop and used by you in under 2 days……A simple LOW resolution model can be delivered in a few hours.
Processes involved in creating the models have been streamlined to minimise time spent which results in low costs for clients

5: What do we need for a 3D visualisation…..?

A 3D Model will generally consist of 1) a 3D ground terrain model of your site location, 2) modelled landscaping such as trees, roads, fences, existing buildings etc. and 3) a model of your proposed development in its location.

The ground terrain model is created from purchased Ordnance Survey data, landscape features are derived from mapping or supplied info, and the development model is created from customer supplied engineering drawings.

Additional options to the basic model can be pre-programed view points that allow instantaneous and repeatable view positions that can be used to show before and after effects of screening etc.
Another addition can be the animated fly/drivethru’s that can be played at public consultations.

6: What are drivethu’s & flythru’s..…?

Although you can manually fly around in the 3D Model environment, this depends on you being available to do the navigation which may not be convenient if you want to show clients offsite.
Flythru’ or Drivethru’ is an animation that allows a viewpoint to follow a pre-programed path, either above the terrain (flythru’) or on the ground (drivethru’).
These animations can then be run on a free 3D Model viewer (if supplied to client) or converted to a video file (mp4, avi, mpg etc) that can be loaded on to any PC, Tablet or even a smart phone. These animations are ideal for public consultations where they can help stakeholders MORE clearly understand aspects of the development such as scale, position and impact.
